Bezienswaardigheden / tips Fundy National Park 2025:

1) Fundy National Park: Fundy National Park werd opgericht op 10 april 1946 en werd officieel geopend op 29 juli 1950. In het Fundy National Park zijn zo'n veertig wandelpaden aangelegd. Ze zijn allemaal goed gemarkeerd en onderhouden, en de meeste zijn ook geschikt voor minder sportieve wandelaars. Fundy National Park is ook de thuisbasis van 25 watervallen, maar slechts een aantal zijn gemakkelijk te bereiken. Een fenomenaal getijverschil en een veelzijdig landschap met rotsachtige stranden, bergen, bossen en uitzichtpunten nodigen je uit om te wandelen, te rusten en te picknicken, kenmerken het Fundy National Park als een hoogtepunt van de Bay of Fundy. Tweemaal per dag overspoelen de getijden de in totaal 13 km lange, stenige strande en donkere, beboste rotsoevers van het park dat bekendstaat als een echt natuurparadijs. Het getijverschil kan tot 14 meter bedragen en is daardoor niet minder spectaculair dan aan de Flowerpot Rocks van Hopewell Cape. In het fraaiste jaargetijde, tijdens de kleurwisseling van de bladeren in de herfst, blijven de toeristenstromen uit, een verademing voor mensen die rust zoeken. De entree tot het park bedraagt CAD 9,00 per volwassen voor één dag.  

2) Dickson Falls Trail: De Dickson waterval is de meest makkelijke en toegankelijke waterval. Het wandelpad van ongeveer 1,4 km lang loopt over een houten vlonder. Eerst loop je langs kleine beekjes en kleine watervallen totdat je uiteindelijk uit komt bij de Dickson waterval. De Dickson waterval is 7 meter lang (25 feet) en is zeer geschikt voor families.  

3) Herring Cove Beach: Het pad naar Herring Cove Beach is makkelijk, je betreedt het strand via een houten trap. Het strand is aantrekkelijk om diverse vogels te bekijken. Bij eb zijn er langs het strand veel interessante bezienswaardigheden te verkennen, zoals rotszeepokken die op de rotsen zitten. Ook is er een kleine grot die is uitgehouwen door de werking van de getijden. Je moet wel over slipperige rotsen klimmen om deze grote te bekijken. Dus wees voorzichtig. Ondanks het hier vrij rustig is is het ook geschikt voor gezinnen als het mooi weer is.

4) Pointe Wolfe Covered Bridge: Deze overdekte brug is gebouwd in 1992 en is 29 meter (94 feet) lang. De overdekte brug is te vinden op Point Wolfe Road en is de verbinding naar Point Wolfe camping. 

5) Pointe Wolfe Beach: Vanaf de overdekte brug loop je een stukje door het bos en kom je bij een kiezelstenenpad die leidt je naar Pointe Wolfe Beach. Het is het beste om bij eb te gaan en bereid je voor op een wandeling langs een kiezel en zandstrand. Bij eb en mooi weer kun je vanaf dit strand de overdekte brug en de overblijfselen van een oude kade zien. Hier heb je ook een prachtig uitzicht op de tegenoverliggende kliffen en het opkomende tij.

6) Third Vault Falls Trail: Op 16 meter is Third Vault Falls de hoogste waterval van Fundy, bijna het dubbele van de hoogte van Dickson Falls. De wandeling van 7,4 kilometer naar Third Vault Falls wordt door Parks Canada als moeilijk beschouwd. 

7) Laverty Falls Trail: De Laverty Falls is een 12 meter (39 feet) hoge waterval. Deze 4.8 kilometer lange route wordt over het algemeen beschouwd als een matig uitdagende route en duurt ongeveer 1,5 uur. Dit is ook een populair gebied om vogels te spotten. 

8) Caribou Plain Trail: De Caribou Plain Trail (4 km, ca 1 tot 1,5 uur) ligt naast Route 114, die dwars door het park loopt, bij Wolfe Lake, ca. 9 km van de noordwestingang en ca. 11 km van Alma. Het pad is geschikt voor gezinnen met kinderen, wordt duidelijk aangegeven en loopt deels door een mooi gemengd bos en deels door drasland met beverdammen en plassen, een gebied dat je oversteekt op een plankier.

9) Matthews Head Trail: De Matthews Head Trail is een 4.5 km lange en uitdagende wandelpad en duurt gemiddeld 1,5 tot 2 uur. Dit is één van de populairste trail in Fundy National Park en is ook een populaire route voor vogels kijken, hiken en trailrunnen. Het uitkijkpunt heeft een geweldig uitzicht op The Hopewell, een rode rotsformatie. Het terrein is vrij ruig en er is veel hoogteverschil over een korte afstand. 

10) Coastal Trail: Het Coastal Trail slingert bijna 10 km (20 km heen en terug) lang langs de kust en biedt je telkens weer een uitzicht op de beboste klippen en de Bay of Fundy. Je kunt hier makkelijk 4 uur voor uittrekken. De Coastal Trail loopt door een gemengd bos naar de picknickplaats bij Herring Cove. Vanaf dit punt kun je het tweede deel van het pad volgen richting Point Wolfe. De trail wordt als moeilijk ervaren, vanaf het begin en het eindpunt loopt het pad steil naar boven en beneden. Vanaf het midden van de trail is het grotendeels vlak. Vanaf hier kun je de opkomst en ondergang van de getijden observeren. 

11) Getijden schema: Het belangrijkste dat je moet weten voor een bezoek aan Fundy is het lokale getijdenschema. Bij vloed kun je peddelen op de Bay of Fundy en bij eb kun je over de oceaanbodem lopen. Verbazingwekkend genoeg kun je beide doen in een tijdsbestek van ongeveer zes uur.

12) Klimaat: De Fundy kust is vaak gehuld in een mystieke mist. In de zomer ontstaat mist wanneer warme lucht van boven het land de koelere lucht boven de Fundybaai ontmoet. Waterdamp condenseert wanneer de warme lucht afkoelt en vormt druppeltjes (mist). Door het verkoelende effect van de Fundy baai in de zomer is het aan de kust meestal 6 graden koeler dan in het binnenland. In de winter is de verhouding omgekeerd, omdat de baai een matigend effect heeft. Hoewel brand in veel andere bossen een natuurlijke verstoring is, is het zeer ongebruikelijk langs de kust van de Fundy baai, omdat de mist vocht in het bos brengt.



Highlights / tips Fundy National Park 2025:

1) Fundy National Park: Fundy National Park was established on April 10, 1946 and officially opened on July 29, 1950. There are about forty hiking trails in Fundy National Park. They are all well marked and maintained, and most are also suitable for less athletic hikers. Fundy National Park is also home to 25 waterfalls, but only a few are easily accessible. A phenomenal tidal range and a diverse landscape with rocky beaches, mountains, forests and viewpoints invite you to walk, rest and picnic, characterize Fundy National Park as a highlight of the Bay of Fundy. Twice a day, the tides wash over the 13 km of stony beaches and dark, forested rocky shores of the park, which is known as a true natural paradise. The tidal range can be up to 14 meters and is therefore no less spectacular than at the Flowerpot Rocks of Hopewell Cape. During the most beautiful season, during the color change of the leaves in autumn, the tourist streams do not arrive, a relief for those seeking peace and quiet. The entrance fee to the park is CAD 9.00 per adult for one day. 

2) Dickson Falls Trail: The Dickson Falls is the easiest and most accessible waterfall. The walking path of about 0.8 miles (1.4 km) long runs over a wooden boardwalk. First you walk along small streams and small waterfalls until you finally reach the Dickson Falls. The Dickson Falls is 7 meters high (25 feet) and is very suitable for families. 

3) Herring Cove Beach: The path to Herring Cove Beach is easy, accessible via wooden steps. The beach is a great spot for birdwatching. At low tide, there are many interesting sights to explore along the beach, such as rock barnacles clinging to the rocks. There's also a small cave carved out by the tides. You do have to climb over slippery rocks to access this cave, so be careful. Although it's relatively quiet here, it's also suitable for families when the weather is nice. 

4) Pointe Wolfe Covered Bridge: This covered bridge, built in 1992, is 94 feet (29 meters) long. The covered bridge is located on Point Wolfe Road and is the connection to Point Wolfe Campground.

5) Pointe Wolfe Beach: From the covered bridge, you'll walk a short distance through the woods to a pebble path that leads to Pointe Wolfe Beach. It's best to go at low tide, and be prepared for a walk along a pebble and sandy beach. At low tide and in good weather, you can see the covered bridge and the remains of an old quay from this beach. From here, you'll also have a beautiful view of the opposite cliffs and the incoming tide.  

6) Third Vault Falls Trail: At 52 feet (16 meters), Third Vault Falls is the highest waterfall in Fundy, almost double the height of Dickson Falls. The 4.5-mile (7.4-kilometer) hike to Third Vault Falls is considered difficult by Parks Canada. 

7) Laverty Falls Trail: Laverty Falls is a 39-foot (12-meter) waterfall. This 3-mile (4.8-kilometer) trail is generally considered moderately challenging and takes about 1.5 hours. It's also a popular birdwatching area. 

8) Caribou Plain Trail: The Caribou Plain Trail (2,5 miles (4 km), approximately 1 to 1.5 hours) is located next to Route 114, which runs through the park, at Wolfe Lake, about 5,5 miles (9 km) from the northwest entrance and about 6.8 miles (11 km) from Alma. Suitable for families with children, the trail is clearly marked and runs partly through a beautiful mixed forest and partly through wetlands with beaver dams and ponds, an area you cross on a boardwalk.

9) Matthews Head Trail: The Matthews Head Trail is a 2.8 mile (4.5 km) long and challenging hiking trail and takes an average of 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. It's one of the most popular trails in Fundy National Park and is also a popular route for birdwatching, hiking, and trail running. The overlook offers a fantastic view of The Hopewell, a red rock formation. The terrain is quite rugged, and there's a significant elevation gain over a short distance. 

10) Coastal Trail: The Coastal Trail winds along the coast for almost 6.2 mile (10 km) 12.4 roundtrip (20 km round trip), offering constant views of the wooded cliffs and the Bay of Fundy. You can easily spend four hours here. The Coastal Trail leads through mixed forest to the picnic area at Herring Cove. From there, you can follow the second section of the trail towards Point Wolfe. The trail is considered difficult, from the start and end point the path runs steeply up and down. From the middle of the trail, it is largely flat. From here, you can observe the rise and fall of the tides.

11) Tide Schedule: The most important thing to know before visiting Fundy is the local tide schedule. At high tide, you can paddle across the Bay of Fundy, and at low tide, you can walk on the ocean floor. Amazingly, you can do both in about six hours. 

12) Climate: The Fundy Coast is often shrouded in a mystical fog. In the summer, fog is created when warm air from over the land meets cooler air over the bay of Fundy. Water vapor condenses as the warm air cools, forming droplets (fog). Due to the cooling effect of the Bay of Fundy in the summer, it is usually 6 degrees cooler on the coast than inland areas. In the winter, the relationship reverses as the bay has a moderating effect. Although fire is a natural disturbance in many other forests, it is very unusual along the Bay of Fundy coast, as the fog brings moisture to the forest.  



Zo'n 130 km ten noordoosten van Saint John, bereikbaar via Highway 1 en 114, ligt het 206 km2 grote Fundy National Park. Met zijn uitgestrekte bossen en moerassen, plassen met bevers, rivierdalen, watervallen en diep ingesneden kust is dit een van de opwindendste gebieden in New Brunswick.

About 130 km (81 miles) northeast of Saint John, accessible via Highways 1 and 114, lies the 206 km2 Fundy National Park. With its vast forests and swamps, beaver ponds, river valleys, waterfalls and deeply indented coastline, this is one of the most exciting areas in New Brunswick.





Het Fundy National Park heeft twee visitors centra (informatie centrum). Één in de buurt van Alma (hierboven op de foto en film) en het Wolfe Lake Visitor Centre, gelegen aan de westelijke ingang van het park.

Op slechts 4 minuten rijden vanaf het Alma visitor centrum ligt de Dickson Falls Trailhead. Dit is één van de meest favoriete trails in het Fundy National Park.

Dit deel van de Dickson Beek heeft verschillende kenmerken die het tot een gezonde beek omgeving maken (zie film). 

This section of Dickson Brook has several features that make it a healthy brook environment (see film). 





Hier vindt je omgevallen bomen en takken, poelen en stroomversnellingen, grote rotsen en inheemse vegetatie. Deze vochtige, koele omgeving is de perfecte leefomgeving voor roodrugsalamanders. Ze leven tussen natte planten dicht bij de beek (zie film).

Here, you will find fallen trees and branches, pools and riffles, large rocks and native vegetation. This moist, cool environment is the perfect home for red-backed salamanders. They live amongst wet plants close to the brook (see film). 





De Dickson Falls in Fundy National Park is 9 meter hoog. Het is een populaire waterval, bekend om zijn toegankelijkheid en het goed onderhouden pad met vlonders en trappen (zie film). 

Dickson Falls in Fundy National Park is 30 feet (9 meters) high. It is a popular waterfall, known for its accessibility and well-maintained boardwalk and stairway (see film).







In het park leidt de kleine Point Wolfe Road je naar Wolfe Beach en naar de historische Covered Bridge, een van de overdekte bruggen die tot de symbolen van New Brunswick behoren (zie film).

Within the park, the small Point Wolfe Road leads you to Wolfe Beach and the historic Covered Bridge, one of the covered bridges that are among the symbols of New Brunswick (see film).





Honderd jaar geleden zou dit uitzicht op de Point Wolfe River een drukke houtindustrie hebben getoond: schepen die de rivier in- en uit voeren, kades vol hout en het lawaai van molenmachines.

One hundred years ago, this view of the Point Wolfe River would have shown a busy lumber industry: ships sailing in and out of the river, wharves stacked with lumber and the noise of mill machinery.



                                      Tegenwoordig waarderen we dit vredige, prachtige uitzicht om andere redenen. 

                                                  Today, we value this peaceful, beautiful view for different reasons.

Er zijn hier veel wandelpaden te vinden, waaronder een die je naar de ruige kust van Fundy bij het Point Wolfe Beach brengt.

There are many hiking trails here, including one that takes you to the rugged Fundy coast at Point Wolfe Beach. 





Vanaf Point Wolfe leidt een korte wandelpad naar het mooie Herring Cove Beach en verder naar de landuitsprong Matthews Head (zie film).

Via een houten trap kom je op Herring Cove Beach. In de zomer periode als het mooi weer is, is het een geliefd strand voor gezinnen.

                                Bij eb kan men naar de rotsachtige landtong lopen (zoals hier op de foto en film).

In de loop van de tijd heeft een constante getijdenwerking een kleine zeegrot uitgesleten die toegankelijk is na een korte klauterpartij over de rotsen. De weg ernaartoe over de gladde rotsen is wel een risico en valpartijen komen geregeld voor.

Over time, constant tidal action has eroded a small sea cave that is accessible after a short scramble over rocks. The path to get there over the slippery rocks is a risk and falls are common.  







Het Coastal Trail slingert bijna 3 km lang langs de kust en biedt je telkens weer een uitzicht op de beboste klippen en de Bay of Fundy.
